A FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH TO PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT:

Phase 1

New Patient Intake and 1st Follow-up Appointment

The New Patient Intake appointment is the first step for all new patients. The intake process is designed to save money and time in the long-run by obtaining a full history and assessment and ordering of necessary diagnostic testing for evaluation before your fully personalized treatment plan is implemented. Identifying the underlying root cause of your symptoms will help us formulate a plan to bring you the results you desire.

The New Patient Intake allows Dr. Cole to more accurately estimate how long your treatment program will last, what it will include and an estimation of cost. It gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have about your condition and what you should expect, and it provides an opportunity for us to get to know each other and determine if our clinic will be a good fit for you over the long-term.

The New Patient Intake includes:

An initial, thorough review of your detailed medical history, as well as a review of relevant lab work if available (* applies to the past 6 months of testing. If there is an extensive history that goes back years, an additional fee to review all of this information will be assessed.)

A detailed review of your Life Health Journey , current symptoms and psychiatric history

A detailed review of your diet and nutritional factors, lifestyle and supplements

  A 90-minute in-person consultation with Dr. Cole

A 45-minute post appointment consultation with our Functional Medicine Nutritionist and Health Coach with info on our approach to nutrition and some favorite recipes

Recommendations and orders for further testing (as necessary)

Access to Nutrimentrx.com with Functional Medicine SF discount of 10%

$600 at time of service

We are a results-oriented practice and know that when patients keep the momentum going, they can and will get better. We're here to provide necessary reassessment with follow-up testing, support for trouble shooting challenges and feedback on when a part of the process is completing and you are ready to move into the completion and maintenance phase.

Each appointment is billed at $350/hour or $200/30-minute session.

Ways in which Dr. Cole can work with you.

Functional Medicine Psychiatry is a “root-cause” approach to diagnosing and treating psychiatric conditions.

The traditional medical model approach would be to base a psychiatric diagnosis, e.g. “Depression” on the symptoms listed in the DSM-V (the universal manual used to diagnose in psychiatry), then treat the depression using antidepressants and trying several different ones over a period of time. Under the disease-based medical model, it embraces the concept that the body has a “disease” and will need to be on medications many times life-long, and that depression is “chronic” and may last forever. If we only focus on the outcome, e.g. treating depression with an SSRI antidepressant, we are not looking at why the body is producing a low amount of Serotonin, we are only treating the surface symptom, and not the underlying cause.

Functional Medicine Psychiatry is based on the fact that the body can heal itself if given the proper environment in which to heal (nutrition, healthy gut microbiome, healthy digestion, and following an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle). Functional Medicine Psychiatry is a Personalized Medicine approach, it takes into account that every human is unique, and that even though depression may look similarly in a group of people, the underlying cause for depression in this group will vary for each person.

Dr. Katie has a unique approach to helping her patients heal and transform.

Many physical conditions leading to inflammation in the body can then trigger brain inflammation, mimicking many common psychiatric conditions including Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and even Psychotic Symptoms. Every part of the body and brain can be affected by chronic underlying illness and inflammation; Dr. Katie investigates the root cause of the inflammation, and tailors the treatment to help reverse and restore the body’s ability to heal.

She believes in first building a strong emotional and physical foundation, which may include laboratory testing or brain imaging, assisting her patients in finding the optimal diet to promote the body’s natural ability to heal. Dr. Katie also uses evidence-based vitamins and supplements to re-balance the body’s natural biochemistry and rhythms. Dr. Katie has training in Functional and Orthomolecular Medicine, Holistic nutrition, Reiki Energy Healing, Women’s Mental Health and Perinatal Psychiatry, Ayurvedic Medicine, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Coaching, and Medical Intuition. She uses a combination of her training and expertise to help her patients reach optimal health and well-being.

Dr. Katie believes that there are times in which prescription medications may be beneficial, and in some cases life-saving. She works with all of her patients to safely and effectively taper off psychiatric medications, or if medications are necessary for ongoing treatment, to minimize dosages needed while promoting the body’s natural ability to stabilize.
